Choosing Between the New York Side and the Ontario Side of Niagara Falls
The New York side gives you the state park; the Ontario side gives you the panoramic view. A two-day comparison with drive times from NYC and Boston.
The Border Confusion: Most Travellers Pick Wrong
The common assumption is that the Canadian side of Niagara Falls has the better view, so that is where you should stay. That is half right and half useless.
The Ontario side does have the unobstructed panorama of all three falls at once, especially Horseshoe Falls. But choosing which side to base yourself on is not about the view from the railing. It is about what you value for the rest of the trip: budget, dining, ease of access, and how much you want to deal with a border crossing at the end of a long day.
This page is a binary decision tool. You will pick New York or Ontario based on four factors. Then you will learn exactly what the border crossing requires, no guesswork.
The Four Factors That Decide Your Side
Views: Which Side Sees What
The Ontario side offers the classic postcard view of Horseshoe Falls from Queen Victoria Park. You see the full curve of the water. The New York side puts you inside the action. At Terrapin Point on Goat Island, you stand at the edge of Horseshoe Falls, not across from it. The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are directly in front of you on the mainland at Prospect Point.
If you want the full sweep without getting wet, pick Ontario. If you want to feel the spray and see the water from above, pick New York. You can walk between both sides in 15 to 25 minutes across the Rainbow Bridge, so you do not have to sleep on the side you prefer for views.
Cost: Hotel And Meal Prices
Niagara Falls, New York (population 48,671) has a median household income of $40,133 (2022 ACS 5 year estimate) and a poverty rate of 24.2%. That shows a struggling local economy, which means lower prices for hotels and casual dining compared to the Ontario side. Niagara Falls, Ontario (population 94,415) has a developed tourist strip, Clifton Hill, with higher room rates and restaurant prices keyed to international visitors.
Budget for a hotel on the New York side if cost is your primary concern. You can still cross for the Ontario view and dinner. The pedestrian toll on the Rainbow Bridge is US $1.00 or CAD $1.00, payable in cash (quarters or dollar coins) or by credit card at the automated turnstiles when leaving Canada or entering the US.
Food: What You Get Where
The Ontario side has Clifton Hill, a dense strip of chain restaurants, candy shops, and tourist bars. The New York side has more local diners and modest ethnic restaurants serving the resident population. Neither side competes with Buffalo, 25 minutes away, for serious food. If you want a memorable meal, budget for a dinner in Buffalo or at a winery in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, a 20 minute drive from the falls.
For quick eating, the New York side costs less per plate. The Ontario side has more variety in a walkable stretch. That is the trade off.
Ease: What The Border Actually Takes
Driving time from New York City to Niagara Falls is approximately 7 hours. From Boston, approximately 7.5 hours. That is the same distance band for both US and Canadian sides. You do not save significant drive time by picking one side over the other.
The Rainbow Bridge is open to pedestrians from 06:00 to 22:00 daily, with seasonal variation. Vehicles cross 24 hours. Pedestrians walk approximately 440 meters (1,450 feet) one way. The crossing itself takes 15 to 25 minutes total, including the border inspection queue. NEXUS lanes are available for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The failure case: if you are on the Ontario side after 22:00 and the pedestrian crossing is closed, you need a vehicle to cross. That means either driving back or paying for a taxi or rideshare across the bridge. Hotels on the New York side that let you walk to the falls also let you avoid this problem entirely.

Border Documents: What You Need to Cross
Document requirements for land border crossings change regularly. The information here reflects rules in effect for 2026. Check the US Customs and Border Protection and Canada Border Services Agency websites directly before you travel.
US citizens need a US travel document, passport card, or enhanced driver's license. Canadian citizens need a Canadian travel document, enhanced driver's license, or NEXUS card. US permanent residents need a green card and their citizenship country's document. Canadian permanent residents need a PR card and their citizenship country's document.
Visa exempt foreign nationals entering the US by land do not need an ESTA. They need a valid travel document. Likewise, visa exempt foreign nationals entering Canada from the US by land do not need an eTA. They need a valid travel document. Foreign nationals who require a visa must have a valid travel document with the appropriate US or Canadian visa.
The single biggest mistake travellers make: assuming a digital copy of a travel document is sufficient. It is not. Border officers require the physical document for land crossings. Carry the original.
Boat Tours and Seasonal Windows
The boat tours on both sides operate from early April to early November. That is the operating season. Each ride lasts approximately 20 minutes. At peak season, boats depart every 15 minutes.
From the New York side, you board at the Observation Tower base at Prospect Point. From the Ontario side, you board at Niagara Parkway near Clifton Hill. Both operators are Niagara City Cruises, but the US side uses the name Maid of the Mist and issues blue ponchos. The Ontario side runs as Voyage to the Falls and issues red ponchos.
Winter visitors find no boat tours. The last sailing is in early November. Winter air temperatures range from -8°C to 2°C (18°F to 36°F). Mist freezes on trees and railings, creating an ice bridge effect. The falls are illuminated from 16:30 to 02:00 through winter. Fireworks run from mid-November to early January on Fridays and Sundays at 20:00. The Ontario side hosts its Winter Festival of Lights from mid-November to early January.
The failure case for winter: if you book for January expecting boat tours, they are not running. Plan around the illumination and fireworks, not the boats.
What to Skip and What Not to Miss
Skip Clifton Hill if you have seen one tourist strip. It is crowded, overpriced, and the attractions are generic. Walk through it once at night for the lights, then leave.
Do not skip Goat Island on the New York side. It is accessible by pedestrian and vehicle bridges from the mainland. From Terrapin Point you get the closest overlook of Horseshoe Falls without a boat. The Cave of the Winds on Goat Island uses wooden walkways that bring you within 6 meters (20 feet) of Bridal Veil Falls. That deck closes in winter but a Gorge Trip tour is available.
Prospect Point on the mainland gives the closest land based view of American Falls. The Observation Tower extends 86 meters (282 feet) over the Niagara Gorge. That is the boarding point for the boat tour.
The single thing that most often goes wrong: travellers underestimate the border crossing time at peak hours and miss their boat tour departure. Book your tour for at least 90 minutes after you plan to arrive at the crossing. That buffer covers the inspection queue.
